NEVERTHELESS, I SHALL REMAIN IN THIS PLACE
and continue singing.
The annual Miami Street Fair was back again! All the rides, food, performances—it was sure to be a lot of fun! Unless, of course, you were stuck in the blazing heat scooping ice cream all day long. He was standing in the shade of a tent, sure, but that didn’t help much when it was nearly a hundred degrees outside. He hadn’t been very smart in deciding on his clothes, either. Really, who else but him would wear pants in this weather? Besides, of course, Lawrence. He didn’t see how his twin brother could dress the way he did in the constant heat. But that was Florida. Will had been living there since eighth grade, but he still wasn’t used to all the heat and sun. He much preferred experiencing all four seasons and woods full of pine trees to year-round summer, beaches, and palm trees. He wouldn’t be able to leave, though, until after he graduated college, if at all. Maybe if he were lucky he could get a job back up in New Jersey, where he and his family had lived before. Hell, he’d even go back up to Canada if he could escape the heat. He probably still had relatives up there, too.
Will wasn’t sure he could look at another ice cream cone ever again after this. His arm was growing tired. Despite the heat outside, inside the freezer was super cold, making the ice cream rock hard and difficult to scoop. He wished the lines of people would just end already. What had made him decide to work at the fair, anyway? He briefly remembered telling himself it would be good to get a little money, that he needed some kind of job for himself. But really, this of all jobs hadn’t been a good idea. And all these people he had to deal with. Will wasn’t the most outgoing person in the world. Even asking for their order, saying “anything else?” and the few other things he was required to say bothered him. His words always came out in a quiet voice. He couldn’t quite help it. Crowds weren’t his thing, and there sure were a lot of people around here. Will almost wished Lawrence had come to the fair. He knew how much his twin hated people, but he also loved to mess with them. In Will’s mind, this would have been a good opportunity for Lawrence to toy with people, so it was a bit strange he hadn’t come. It was probably smart he wasn’t there, though, given the heat and Lawrence’s usual wardrobe.
Passing a hand over his forehead, Will began to wish it was closing time already. His foot tapped impatiently. If only he had something to entertain himself, like his notebook. However, he wasn’t exactly allowed to be composing music on the job. He would do so in his head, but he was afraid he would forget it by the time he got to a piece of paper. He found that happening more often than he would have liked. Idly he reached up and played with his earrings.
